What are the My Hero Academia movie booklet manga?

Four little books a million people got free, and nobody could buy.

Each film premiere came with a manga that was never sold. Japanese cinemagoers in the first wave received an exclusive booklet volume: Vol. 0, Origin, with Two Heroes (2018, first million attendees); Vol. R with Heroes Rising (2019); Vol. W with World Heroes’ Mission (2021, a million-copy print run); and Vol. Next with You’re Next (2024, 1.5 million copies). Each contains a one-shot drawn for the film.

Horikoshi’s own contributions anchor the set: All Might: Rising, his portrait of the young All Might and his teacher Nana Shimura, in Vol. 0, later animated as an OVA; and League of Villains: Undercover in Vol. R. Yoko Akiyama, the Team-Up Missions artist, drew for Vol. W (Hawks: Soothe) and Vol. Next (A Piece of Cake, also adapted as an OVA). A fifth booklet-style one-shot, Horikoshi’s Endeavor’s Mission, ran in Weekly Shonen Jump in August 2021 ahead of the third film, with Akiyama’s Connect to the Day following on Jump+ in 2024. Viz published the booklets in English, the only retail route to any of them.

THE FOUR BOOKLETS

2018 to 2024
Vol. 0 · Origin (2018)
One million copies for Two Heroes’ first audiences. Contents: All Might: Rising, Horikoshi’s nine-page origin of his hero’s hero. The set’s keystone.
Vol. R (2019)
For Heroes Rising: League of Villains: Undercover, Horikoshi drawing the villains’ side of the film. Viz published it in English in March 2020.
Vol. W (2021)
For World Heroes’ Mission: Akiyama’s Hawks: Soothe. American opening-weekend audiences received their own 76-page booklet edition in theatres.

THE LAST BOOKLET AND THE MAGAZINE ONES

2021 to 2024
Vol. Next (2024)
For You’re Next: Akiyama’s A Piece of Cake, with 1.5 million copies printed, the largest run of the four. Viz’s English edition followed in October 2024.
Endeavor’s Mission (2021)
Horikoshi’s own film tie-in one-shot in the magazine itself, Weekly Shonen Jump, 2 August 2021: the booklet idea escaping into the parent publication.
Connect to the Day (2024)
Akiyama’s Jump+ one-shot for You’re Next, 20 July 2024: the digital companion to Vol. Next, completing the set of film-side manga.
