The Spyro Gallery
A trilogy the West finished, and Japan never did.
Insomniac Games made three Spyro games for the PlayStation in three years. Japan received the first two, each rebuilt to be slower and gentler, and never received the third at all. This gallery walks the trilogy in covers, one section per game, and says plainly where a cover is verified, where it is still a gap, and where no Japanese box exists to find.
SPYRO THE DRAGON
Insomniac · PlayStation · 1998 / Japan 1999SPYRO 2
Ripto's Rage · Gateway to Glimmer · Tondemo Tours · 1999 / Japan 2000America · Ripto's Rage · Cover Gap
The American cover is documented: Spyro stands in an action pose before a wall of flames, Ripto's face looming behind them. The Library has not yet verified a clean scan at its working size, so this tile stands in for it rather than borrowing an unchecked image. Product SCUS-94425, November 2, 1999.
PAL · Gateway to Glimmer · Cover Gap
Europe and Australia got a different name and a calmer cover: Spyro running toward the viewer against a sunlit yellow landscape. Product SCES-02104, November 5, 1999. A verified scan is still owed.
Japan · Tondemo Tours · Cover Gap
Japan's edition is Spyro X Sparx: Tondemo Tours, product SCPS-10128, March 16, 2000, the second Japanese rebuild. Its box is documented in release data; a verified scan is still owed.
SPYRO: YEAR OF THE DRAGON
Insomniac · PlayStation · 2000 · No Japanese edition
America · 2000
Spyro front and centre with the playable critters around him: Sheila, Sergeant Byrd, Bentley, and Agent 9. Product SCUS-94467.
Japan · No Edition
There is no Japanese box for this game, because there was no Japanese release. After two underperforming rebuilds, the third Spyro was never released in Japan at all. The empty space beside the American cover is the accurate picture.
