What Happens at the End of Terranigma?

Ark resurrects the world for the Devil, dies for it, and is reborn to undo it. Spoilers throughout.

The twist lands in Chapter 3. Ark has done everything the Elder of Crysta ordered, continents, life, civilization, and the Elder tells him his mission is fulfilled and he may now die. The Elder is Dark Gaia, the Devil of the game's two-will cosmology, and Ark was its instrument: only a creature of the Darkside could raise the surface world into a shape Dark Gaia meant to rule. Ark, the village of Crysta, and Ark's beloved Elle are all creations of the underworld, built for this purpose.

Saved by the sage Kumari, Ark gathers the five Starstones and summons his Lightside self at Dryvale, at the South Pole, where God and Devil fought their last battle. The Lightside self names him the legendary hero, and kills him. Chapter 4, "Resurrection of the Hero," opens with Ark reborn as a baby, carried by the soul of the surface world, Light Gaia. Darkside Elle, sent to kill the threat he represents, recognizes the child instead, and later gives her life to kill the traitor Yomi and save him.

Ark defeats Beruga, returns to the underworld, and destroys Dark Gaia, knowing the price in advance: everything Dark Gaia made, Crysta, its people, and Ark himself, vanishes with it. Light Gaia tells him that as creator and defender he is what humans would call a god. He sleeps, and dreams he is a bird flying over the world he made, watching it grow old. The epilogue cuts to the Lightside Elle, in her original home, answering a knock at the door. The game ends on the knock. It never shows who is standing there.

THE MOVES, IN ORDER

Chapter 3 to the epilogue
The betrayal
The Elder who raised Ark, guided him, and sent him out is Dark Gaia itself. Every resurrection Ark performed was the Devil's plan, executed by the only hands that could do it.
The two Arks
Ark was created in the image of his Lightside self, the legendary hero. Meeting him is the game's darkest scene: the original looks at the copy, calls him the hero, and ends him.
Elle, twice
There are two Elles, one of each face of the planet. The underworld Elle dies killing Yomi, Dark Gaia's servant, who had posed as Ark's friendly companion since the opening hour. The surface Elle survives to hear the knock.
The vanishing
Crysta does not burn or fall. It simply stops, its people frozen mid-gesture in the game's final underworld scene, as the Darkside unmade itself is allowed to be at rest. Ark is promised, by implication, reincarnation into the world he saved.

WHY IT LASTS

The ending in the reviews
The verdict of the era
Jeuxvideo's retrospective called Terranigma the title that "marked the end of the reign of SNES in the most poetic way possible." Kotaku's 2020 essay framed the whole game as a story of the death and rebirth of the world, with the ending as its point.
The bird
Ark's last dream, flight over a living Earth, is the image the fan campaigns of 2021 kept returning to: a hero whose reward is to watch, not to stay. The 2027 re-release gives the ending an audience in North America for the first time. See the re-release page.
