What Is ActRaiser Renaissance?

The 1990 god game, rebuilt in 2021 and released the day it was announced.

ActRaiser Renaissance is Square Enix's remake of Quintet's first game, released on September 23, 2021, the same day it was announced, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, iOS, and Android. It was notable before it was played: a Quintet catalogue title, dormant for decades inside a famously tangled rights situation, simply appeared. Its existence became the strongest public evidence that Square Enix could still publish Quintet's work, a thread that leads directly to Terranigma's return.

The remake keeps the original's two-part structure, side-scrolling action stages around a god's-eye town-building simulation, and changes the flow of both. The action stages gain extra input commands; the simulation maps gain tower defense segments, siege quests in which the angel and the town's heroes hold the settlement against waves of monsters while it grows.

It also adds what remakes rarely dare: a new post-game land, Alcaleone, that the 1990 game never had. And it brought back the original composer. Yuzo Koshiro fully recreated his 1990 soundtrack and composed fifteen new tracks, each rendered in both the original Super Nintendo sample style and the remake's higher fidelity audio.

WHAT CHANGED

1990 to 2021
ActRaiser action stage, the boss battle against the manticore at Bloodpool
The original · 1990
An action stage from the Super Nintendo game: the Master's statue fights the manticore at Bloodpool. Renaissance rebuilds these stages with a wider move set rather than reinventing them.
Tower defense
The simulation half, once a peaceful building exercise interrupted by flying monsters, now runs settlement siege quests: tower defense battles layered over the town you are trying to grow.
Alcaleone
A new region that opens after the ending, written for the remake. It is the first new ActRaiser land in 28 years, since ActRaiser 2 in 1993.
Two soundtracks in one
Koshiro's score exists in the remake in dual form: period Super Nintendo samples and a modern rendering, with fifteen compositions that have no 1990 counterpart at all.

WHY IT MATTERS TO THIS SHELF

The remake as evidence
Proof of reach
When Renaissance appeared in 2021, commentators noted it implied Square Enix held working access to Quintet's rights despite president Tomoyoshi Miyazaki being out of contact. See What Happened to Quintet?
The public nudge
In December 2023 Koshiro posted that Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma were "still awaiting their revival" and urged Square Enix to bring them to modern consoles. One of the two has now happened.
