The Xbox RPG Gallery

A PC empire, two Star Wars, and two games Japan kept.

The original Xbox was an American console that Japan mostly declined, and its role-playing shelf tells that story in both directions. Bethesda proved a dense PC epic could live on a console. BioWare built the era's defining Star Wars saga and its first original world. Lionhead's satellite made morality visible. And at the far end of the shelf stand two Japanese prints with no Western editions at all: an Atlus mainline game and a FromSoftware game about America, voiced in English, that America was never sold. This gallery holds the era cover first, with the histories and the documented questions behind each name.

Read the covers as the evidence they are. Where a regional box is verified, it stands here, labeled with its territory. Where a game has only cover art verified, the tile says cover art. Where no Western box exists, because no Western release exists, the gold owl marks the gap instead of a substitute. One honest exception runs the other way: Dark Alliance was a PlayStation 2 game first, so its tile carries the North American PS2 box and says so. Nothing on this shelf implies an exclusive that was not one.

THE ELDER SCROLLS III: MORROWIND

Bethesda Game Studios · Xbox · 2002
Morrowind cover art, the triangular sigil and gold title on a parchment ground
Cover art · 2002
The parchment and gold sigil design shared across the game's editions. Shown from a small verified file; a larger scan is a swap-in upgrade. Regional Xbox boxes are not yet verified to this Library's standard.
The island, hand built
Vvardenfell was crafted rather than generated, after Daggerfall's procedural sprawl, and the Construction Set that built it shipped inside the PC box. Four million copies by 2005, and the template for Oblivion and Skyrim.

STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC

BioWare · LucasArts · Xbox · 2003
Knights of the Old Republic cover art, Darth Malak and Bastila Shan with crossed lightsabers
Cover art · 2003
Malak's mask above Bastila's double bladed saber: the cover art shared across the game's editions, BioWare and LucasArts marks below.
The fastest seller on Xbox
More than 270,000 units in two weeks, its initial allocation gone in four days, a 93 on Metacritic, and a twist its own Bastila did not see coming.

STAR WARS KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC II: THE SITH LORDS

Obsidian Entertainment · LucasArts · Xbox · 2004
Knights of the Old Republic II cover art, Darth Nihilus's white mask above dueling figures
Cover art · 2004
Nihilus's white mask over the duel: the sequel's cover art, Obsidian and LucasArts marks below.
Fourteen months, and it shows, and it sings
An 86 on Metacritic for a game its lead designer calls unfinished. Kreia was GameSpy's best character of 2005. A planet named M4-78 is not in the game, and the reason is documented.

FABLE

Big Blue Box · Lionhead · Microsoft · Xbox · 2004
Fable cover art, the young Hero of Oakvale above his horned, red eyed reflection
Cover art · 2004
The Hero above his own horned reflection: the whole design argument of Fable in one image, good above, evil below, the player choosing.
375,000 copies in a week
The fastest selling Xbox game at EB Games in its launch week, from a first time satellite studio, trailing the most famous hype campaign of its generation.

JADE EMPIRE

BioWare · Microsoft Game Studios · Xbox · 2005
Jade Empire North American Xbox box art, a martial artist heroine wreathed in flame above the cast
America · Xbox box · 2005
The North American Xbox box itself: Xbox banner, Only on Xbox badge, ESRB M, BioWare and Microsoft marks. Japan received this game in June 2005; it is the shelf's control case, proof the traffic ran both ways.
An 89 that sold like a footnote
BioWare's dream project and first original world: 500,000 copies by July 2005, below expectations, and a co-founder who has spent a decade explaining the calendar.

BALDUR'S GATE: DARK ALLIANCE

Snowblind Studios · Multiplatform · PS2 2001 · Xbox 2002
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance North American PlayStation 2 box art, Adrianna with a raised sword against a burst of light
America · PlayStation 2 box · 2001
Deliberately the PS2 box: Dark Alliance is a multiplatform game and was a PlayStation 2 game first (December 2001), reaching Xbox in October 2002. This tile does not imply an Xbox exclusive, because there was not one.
The engine starts here
Snowblind built the Dark Alliance engine for this game. Its second career, powering Champions of Norrath, is told on the PS2 shelf; this page tells the invention, and the Xbox port's honest standing: late, unchanged, still an 83.

SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI: NINE

Atlus · Xbox · Japan only · 2002
Shin Megami Tensei Nine Japanese Xbox box art, Yasuomi Umetsu's cast over a digital Tokyo grid
Japan · Xbox box · 2002 · The only box
The Japanese Xbox box, complete with its “Stand Alone Version” wording: a mainline Atlus RPG in a green case. There is no Western box, because there was no Western release, in 2002 or ever.
SOJ gold owl, marking a cover that does not exist
America and Europe · No box exists
No American or European edition of Nine was ever released, announced servers and all. The gold owl stands where a Western box would go. The game is not backwards compatible and has no digital re-release, so this Japanese print is the whole supply.

METAL WOLF CHAOS

FromSoftware · Xbox · Japan only · 2004
Metal Wolf Chaos Japanese Xbox box art, the president's mech before an American flag and flames
Japan · Xbox box · 2004 · The only box
The Japanese Xbox box: Only on Xbox and Live badges, CERO 15, FromSoftware's mark, and an American flag behind the mech. The most American game of its era was sold only in Japan.
SOJ gold owl, marking a cover that does not exist
America · No box until 2019
No Western box exists for the original release. Western players in 2004 received a hidden demo on an Official Xbox Magazine disc, and, fifteen years later, the XD remaster on newer consoles.
