The Sonic Games Gallery

Ten years, three consoles, two hedgehogs. One gallery.

This gallery shelves the six Sonic games this Library documents in depth, from the 1991 original to the last Sonic released for a Sega console. Sonic is the series where the Japanese and American packages tell on each other: for the Genesis years the two regions drew different Sonics for the same cartridges, and by the Dreamcast the art had converged on one worldwide painting. The pairs below are the evidence, region by region. Every cover was viewed and verified before it was shelved here.

Each section opens the game's history, and its questions. Two of the doors lead to pages that were already on the Sonic shelf; they are marked as such.

THE SHELF AS A WHOLE

1991 to 2001

Read down the pairs and the decade argues with itself. Japan's boxes are graphic design, typography and pop colour; America's are airbrushed narrative paintings, louder and more literal, until the Dreamcast, when Uekawa's single design made the argument moot. The sales moved the other way: these games were bigger in America than anywhere, which is exactly what they were designed to be. The mandate page in the first section explains why.
