The Dragon Quest Gallery

One series, two histories: a national institution in Japan, a rumor in America, told cover by cover.

Dragon Quest was created by Yuji Horii, drawn by Akira Toriyama, and scored by Koichi Sugiyama, a trio that stayed with the series for decades. In Japan its launches were national events big enough to move stock prices and, once, to empty classrooms. In America the same games arrived late, renamed Dragon Warrior, sometimes not at all: five of the eight games on this shelf reached the West years behind Japan, and two of them waited more than a decade.

This shelf runs the main line from 1986 to 2004, plus the Monsters spin-off that took the series' bestiary handheld. Every cover is a door to that game's history. Where Japan and the West dressed the same game differently, both boxes stand side by side.
