In Japan he is Rockman; in America he is Mega Man, a name an executive substituted because he called the original horrible. The classic line runs from a six person team's Famicom game in 1987 to the best selling entry in the franchise in 2018, and the boxes tell the story in paint: Japan's covers crowd every Robot Master around their small opponent, while America spent years drawing a different hero entirely, pistol included.

Every cover below is a door. Behind it sits the game's history, how Capcom made it and how its own era received it, and behind that, the questions its fans still ask. Two of these games were never sold in a box at all, and one Japanese box has not yet been sourced for this shelf; those tiles say so, in gold, rather than borrow another game's art.
